About This Game
Classic Chess brings the familiar thirty-two-piece starting position to a complete 8x8 board. Develop your pieces, contest the centre and keep your king safe while calculating the consequences of every exchange. Legal-move highlights make the rules easier to follow, and three computer strengths let you practise at a comfortable pace or take on a deeper tactical search. Choosing Black turns the board around and lets the computer make the first move.
The Science Behind It
Chess asks players to hold possible board positions in mind, compare candidate moves and revise plans after an opponent responds. These demands involve visuospatial working memory, pattern recognition and deliberate reasoning during play. Practising chess builds familiarity with its tactical and strategic patterns; it should not be treated as a guarantee of broader cognitive improvement.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Classic Chess use the standard rules?
Yes. Every game begins with the usual 8x8 starting position and uses standard piece movement, check, checkmate, castling, en passant and pawn promotion.
Can I choose my colour and computer difficulty?
Yes. Choose White or Black and challenge a Novice, Club or Master computer opponent. The board turns so your pieces begin at the bottom.
How do I castle?
Select your king and then a highlighted castling destination or the rook on that side. Castling is available only when the king and rook have not moved, the path is clear, and the king does not start in check or pass through an attacked square.
Can I take back a move?
You receive one free takeback per game. Further takebacks require the short memory challenge used across the site.
