Antichess

Lose every piece before the computer does. Captures are compulsory across the whole board, and a player with no legal move also wins.

  • • If any capture exists, every quiet move is forbidden.
  • • Kings are ordinary pieces: no check, checkmate or castling.
  • • En passant is compulsory when it is the only capture.
  • • Pawns may promote to queen, rook, bishop, knight or king.

About This Game

Antichess turns familiar chess geometry inside out. Material is a burden, captures are compulsory and the strongest-looking move in ordinary chess can be a serious mistake. The challenge is to offer pieces in an order the opponent cannot refuse while avoiding captures that help the other side empty its own army. This implementation follows Lichess-style rules: kings have no royal status, en passant participates in the global capture obligation, and pawns may promote to a king as well as the four standard promotion pieces.

The Science Behind It

Because Antichess reverses the value of material while preserving familiar movement patterns, it exercises cognitive flexibility and inhibitory control. Players must suppress ordinary chess heuristics, track forced moves across the full board and plan sacrifice sequences whose value depends on turn order and future mobility.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you win Antichess?

You win when it is your turn and you have no pieces left, or when you still have pieces but no legal move. This reverses the usual chess objective.

Do check and checkmate exist in Antichess?

No. Kings are ordinary capturable pieces, may move into attacked squares, may stand beside one another and may even appear more than once after promotion.

What happens when a capture is available?

Capturing is mandatory across the entire board. If one or more captures exist, every quiet move is unavailable, but you may choose among all available captures.
