About This Game

Racing Kings changes the purpose of familiar chess movement. Both armies begin packed into the lower two ranks and both kings head in the same direction, toward rank 8. Because checking is forbidden, long-range pieces are as useful for closing safe lanes and shielding a king as they are for capturing. White has the first move, balanced by Black's chance to equalize immediately after a White finish. The local opponent uses the same complete legality and finish rules at every search depth across three difficulty settings.

The Science Behind It

The shared finish line asks players to track routes, blockers and attacked squares while suppressing the familiar impulse to give check. That combination can exercise visuospatial planning, rule switching and inhibitory control during play, although it should be treated as a strategy challenge rather than a clinical cognitive intervention.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you win Racing Kings?

Move your king legally onto rank 8 before the opposing king. Black wins immediately when Black arrives first. If White arrives first, Black gets exactly one reply and draws by reaching rank 8 on that move; any other reply gives White the win.

Can you give check in Racing Kings?

No. A move is illegal if the resulting board attacks either king, whether the attack is direct, discovered, or created by a capture. Kings remain royal, cannot be captured, and cannot stand next to one another.

Are there pawns or castling?

No. The fixed Racing Kings opening contains kings, queens, rooks, bishops and knights only. There is no castling, en passant or promotion.

How are draws handled?

A successful Black equalizing reply, stalemate, automatic threefold repetition, or 100 halfmoves without a capture produces a draw. Bare kings are not an automatic draw because they can still race.
